Many parents will not be familiar with many of the calculation methods we use nowadays, because the teaching of maths was different twenty years ago than it is today!
Today’s methods are designed to maximize the children’s understanding of the maths that they are taught. We do not teach methods that are just 'shortcuts' but instead aim to develop a deep, conceptual understanding of all areas of maths. To this end, we have invested in Maths No Problem, a scheme deeply rooted in a Singapore style of teaching. We have attached some videos below which explain the scheme in more detail.
It is really important that, in the early stages of learning, parents encourage their children to use the methods that they are being taught in school. Trying to show children alternative ways before they are ready for them can hinder progress rather than help. Please talk to your child's teacher if you want to discuss the methods they are being taught - we would be delighted to talk to you and are working on videos of each of the written methods that we use in class.
